Build Software That Solves Real Business Problems
Medical Data Systems is looking for an experienced C#/.NET Desktop Application Developer to join our 10-person development team in Vero Beach, Florida.
This isn’t a position where you’ll spend your days working on one small piece of a large commercial software product. MDS develops and supports custom applications used throughout our own organization. Our development team works directly with the people who use our systems, learns how the business operates, identifies opportunities for improvement, and builds practical software solutions.
Because we’re a relatively small development organization supporting a midsized company, our developers have the opportunity to work across different applications, technologies, and business processes. We are looking for someone who enjoys that variety and wants to understand why we’re building something—not simply what code needs to be written.
What You'll Be Doing
You will design, develop, enhance, test, document, and maintain Windows desktop applications using C# and .NET Framework. Your work will include:
- Developing and enhancing Windows desktop applications using C# and .NET Framework 4
- Working with WinForms applications and relational databases
- Writing and optimizing SQL queries using Microsoft SQL Server and/or Sybase
- Translating business requirements into practical software solutions
- Working directly with business users and IT team members to understand problems and determine the best technical solution
- Analyzing production issues, identifying root causes, and developing solutions
- Designing, developing, testing, documenting, and deploying application changes
- Performing unit testing, integration testing, and other quality-assurance activities
- Participating in code reviews and maintaining development standards
- Using Visual Studio and Git as part of the development process
- Supporting applications throughout their lifecycle and improving existing systems when opportunities are identified
- Learning the business processes behind the applications you develop so that you can make informed technical decisions
This Is More Than a Programming Job
Our developers are expected to become knowledgeable about the business areas they support.
A business user may come to you with a problem that sounds simple: “We need the application to do X.” Your job isn’t simply to turn that sentence into code. You’ll need to understand the underlying process, ask questions, identify the actual need, consider alternatives, and develop a solution that works for the people and processes involved.
That makes problem-solving, curiosity, communication, and business understanding just as important to us as programming ability.
We’re looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, wants to understand the complete problem, and takes pride in delivering a solution that actually works.
Our Development Environment
Our primary development technologies include:
- C#
- .NET Framework 4
- Windows Forms (WinForms)
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Sybase
- Visual Studio
- Git
This is a desktop application development position, not a web development position.
Our developers are not responsible for general technical support, network administration, or help-desk functions. Their focus is software development and solving business problems through technology.
AI and Emerging Technology
MDS also has an AI initiative focused on using intelligent systems to improve efficiency and business outcomes.
AI/LLM experience is not required for this position.
However, developers who have experience or an interest in AI, large language models, data processing, or integrating AI into applications will have opportunities to participate in projects in this area. Depending on experience and interest, you may have opportunities to:
- Integrate AI/LLM capabilities into internal applications
- Build solutions that use existing AI models
- Explore ways AI can improve development and business processes
- Experiment with and evaluate emerging AI technologies
- Contribute to internal AI initiatives
We are particularly interested in developers who are curious about new technology and enjoy learning how it can be applied to solve practical problems.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field and at least 1 year of professional programming experience
- Equivalent professional experience, applicable technical education, or relevant certifications may be considered in lieu of a degree
- 1+ years of professional experience developing applications with C#/.NET
- 1+ years of experience writing SQL queries and working with relational databases
- Experience developing desktop/Windows applications
- Experience with WinForms or a comparable Windows desktop application framework
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Sybase
- Working knowledge of software development principles, testing, debugging, and application architecture
- Ability to analyze a problem, identify its root cause, and develop practical solutions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical business users
- Ability to manage multiple projects or priorities in a fast-paced environment
Particularly Valuable
- Experience maintaining and enhancing established applications
- Experience working in a business environment where developers interact directly with users
- Experience with Git and Visual Studio
- Experience working with legacy or long-lived applications
- Experience integrating applications with databases or other internal systems
- AI/LLM experience or a demonstrated interest in applying AI to practical business problems
- A strong desire to learn the business processes behind the applications you develop
Are You a Good Fit?
This position may be a particularly good fit if you can answer yes to most of the following:
- Do you have professional experience developing C# desktop applications, rather than primarily web applications?
- Are you comfortable working with WinForms, .NET Framework, SQL, and relational databases?
- When a user describes a problem, do you naturally want to understand what they’re actually trying to accomplish before deciding how to code it?
- Do you enjoy figuring out the root cause of a problem rather than simply fixing the immediate symptom?
- Are you comfortable talking directly with people who aren’t software developers?
- Do you like having ownership of a project from understanding the requirement through development, testing, and delivery?
- Are you comfortable working in a small development team where you may work on several different types of applications or problems?
- Do you enjoy learning how a business operates and using that knowledge to build better software?
- Are you interested in learning new technologies, including AI, even if you don’t currently have AI development experience?
If your answer is yes to most of these questions, we’d like to hear from you.
What You Can Expect
MDS is a midsized company with a relatively small development team. That means you’ll have an opportunity to make a visible contribution rather than being limited to one small component of a large software organization.
Our developers work on applications that directly support the company’s operations, allowing you to see the results of your work and understand the people and processes your software supports.
The starting salary for this position is $70,000, with a full benefits package.
